Steven Gerrard has timely Liverpool message for Trent Alexander-Arnold despite one 'regret'

Liverpool.com - Wed, 03/27/2024 - 08:00

Steven Gerrard recently revealed he has regrets about not playing for José Mourinho. But the former Liverpool captain stands by his career choices.

The legendary Liverpool figure explained his feelings, claiming he has had a relationship from afar with Mourinho for many years. The allure of playing under him was always strong.

"I love the manager, I love the man. I've had a distant relationship with him for many many years. But, I have regrets for not playing for the man and the coach because I know he would've made me a better player. I know we would've added more trophies to what I've already won," Gerrard told Rio Ferdinand's FIVE.

Gerrard was touted as the final touch to Mourinho's midfield in 2005 after Liverpool's historic UEFA Champions League triumph in Istanbul. However, no such move materialized despite heavy speculation.

Gerrard would have bolstered the already strong midfield of Frank Lampard, Joe Cole and Claude Makélélé in a Chelsea side that earned plenty of honors. Yet he is certain he did not make the wrong choice.

"But, looking back now, I have no regrets not signing for Chelsea, I don't regret not signing for Chelsea at all," Gerrard insisted. "I'm happy with the decision I made."

Despite ultimately missing out on the Premier League, Gerrard will forever have a deep connection with Liverpool Football Club, where he is widely regarded as one the best players of all time. After the transfer saga, the former captain continued to be the driving force of Liverpool's late 2000s to early 2010s.

Steven Gerrard talked about his deep bond with Liverpool, the club from his city. He said that winning a few trophies with Liverpool is much more special to him than winning lots more somewhere else, echoing Trent Alexander-Arnold's recent comments about the rivalry with Manchester City.

"The connection I've got with Liverpool, my hometown club, maybe underachieved at times in certain years with Liverpool," said Gerrard. "For me it is all about winning trophies, it's also about memories and what they mean to you. Me winning four or five trophies at Liverpool means an awful lot more to me than if I won 10 or 11 at Chelsea."

He then remembered the amazing 2006 FA Cup final where he scored a brilliant goal to help Liverpool win against West Ham. They were losing but then won on penalties after the captain inspired a comeback, netting a stunning late equalizer.

Gerrard also shared why he stayed at Liverpool even when he thought about leaving. Winning for Liverpool meant sharing joy with people he loves.

"What kept me at Liverpool, when I was close to deciding 'should I go, should I stay? ' When I win for Liverpool, I share it with people that are really close to me. Not many people will understand that."

Liverpool.com says: One person who certainly should understand that is Alexander-Arnold. These comments from Gerrard are timely in the midst of rumbles about Real Madrid.

Perhaps not since Gerrard has anyone had the potential to go on and achieve the same legendary status. Another Academy product, and now the vice captain, Alexander-Arnold is on the same path.

He's also lucky enough to be in a Liverpool team more than capable of winning the biggest honors, even if Manchester City serves the 'Chelsea' role of being able to win more. But Alexander-Arnold has the luxury of his boyhood club being one of the best teams in the world right now, and that should make his decision for him.

Jürgen Klopp heir candidate can wow Liverpool brass this weekend after impressing Pep Guardiola

Liverpool.com - Wed, 03/27/2024 - 07:32

Michael Edwards is set to watch a potential Liverpool manager in action this weekend. Everyone remembers their first trip to Anfield, and Roberto De Zerbi is no exception.

Even with all the money in the Premier League these days, that old saying still holds true. Just ask Brighton's boss, De Zerbi.

Just days after he took over from Graham Potter at Brighton in October 2022, De Zerbi found himself on the sidelines at Anfield for his first taste of being a Premier League manager. It wasn't a bad introduction.

Not many people at Anfield — whether they were Liverpool or Brighton fans — knew much about De Zerbi's managerial career. It had only taken him outside Italy once in nine years before he joined Brighton.

But by the time the final whistle blew at Anfield, everyone had noticed De Zerbi's team. They'd played brilliantly, ending the game with a draw in a thrilling match with six goals. And they'd even had Liverpool close to their first league defeat at Anfield in over 500 days.

De Zerbi made quite an impression in that first Premier League game. He quickly showed he was a talented tactician who could one day manage one of the Premier League's 'Big Six' as his reputation continued to grow.

Almost a year and a half later, the Italian is now one of the top picks by bookies to take over from Jürgen Klopp at Liverpool. He's up there with Sporting CP's Rúben Amorim and of course Bayer Leverkusen's Xabi Alonso.

That's why this weekend's game at Anfield is so important. Not just for Brighton and their hopes of playing in Europe, but also for De Zerbi. It's like he's quietly trying out for the soon-to-be open job at Anfield.

If Brighton can beat Liverpool at Anfield — something no team has done since February 2023 — it would be a big deal. It could show Michael Edwards, who's just started working for Liverpool's owners in Merseyside, that De Zerbi is more than just a name in the gossip columns.

Even though De Zerbi has only managed 60 Premier League games, he's shown he deserves to be talked about. And those talks will happen between Edwards, Liverpool's new sporting director Richard Hughes, and owners John Henry and Tom Werner back in Boston.

After signing a four-year contract with Brighton, De Zerbi impressed many people, including Manchester City's manager Pep Guardiola. In May 2023, Guardiola said, "I think Roberto is one of the most influential managers in the last 20 years," and added, "There is no team playing the way they play — unique. I had the feeling he would have an impact and it would be great but I didn't expect them to do it in this short space of time."

Guardiola also praised the team's style: "Twenty or 25 chances, they monopolize the ball in a way it hasn't been for a long time, a keeper like a holding midfielder, if you don't play at a high level he can do whatever he wants against you."

He continued to admire Brighton's success and approach, saying, "They deserve the success, and are a team I try to learn from. [They are like a] Michelin star restaurant, unique. "In Catalonia, the best cook changed the cuisine, and Brighton are playing with something special and it's an incredible challenge."

If Klopp says similar things after this weekend's game, it will show that De Zerbi is doing really well. But this time, everyone at Anfield knows all about this clever Italian coach already.

Liverpool.com says: De Zerbi is something of an outside candidate, at least compared to Alonso, but he can remind Liverpool of his qualities at the weekend. Hopefully he doesn't, but the Reds are undoubtedly coming up against a very good manager.

You don't earn praise like that from Guardiola for no reason. And even this season, where things haven't quite gone as well, Brighton is still in the hunt for Europe, while the underlying data suggests it 'deserves' even more.

17 Liverpool players who could have played for different countries – including Trent & Robbo!

ThisIsAnfield.com - Wed, 03/27/2024 - 07:00

The international break is always busy for Liverpool with the majority of senior players called up – but many of them were eligible for more than one country.

As an elite-level club, it is never a surprise when most of the Liverpool squad departs for international duty four times a season.

For some, that can even include tournaments midway through the campaign, which has proved disruptive throughout Jurgen Klopp‘s reign.

But while it would be hard to picture the players in any shirt other than their national team, many of them could have faced a decision over which country to represent.

Alexis Mac Allister won the World Cup with Argentina in 2022 and is a key player for his country, but he would have qualified for Italy through his grandmother.

While Thiago was born in Italy and chose to represent Spain, he was also eligible for Brazil like both of his parents.

Two other native Brazilians, Alisson and fellow goalkeeper Marcelo Pitaluga, hold German passports, while Joel Matip was born in Germany but played for Cameroon before retiring in 2015.

Virgil van Dijk and Ryan Gravenberch are both descendants of Suriname, the South American country with historical ties to the Netherlands.

Their Dutch team-mate Cody Gakpo would have been eligible for both Togo and Ghana through his parents and grandparents.

Ibrahima Konate is another Liverpool player who could have opted for an African nation, with the France centre-back qualifying for Mali, where his parents were born.

Similarly, Joe Gomez was eligible for the Gambia through his father and Jarell Quansah could still opt for any of England, Scotland, Ghana or Barbados through various family connections.

It has also been claimed that Curtis Jones could play for Nigeria through his grandmother.

Before making his England debut in 2018, Trent Alexander-Arnold was eligible for the United States, where his mother was born, while Scotland captain Andy Robertson could have swapped to the Republic of Ireland due to his grandmother.

Stefan Bajcetic plays his international football for Spain U21s but is eligible for Serbia, while Fabio Carvalho most recently played for Portugal U21s but previously represented England and could switch back.

Finally, Rhys Williams could receive a call-up for Jamaica in the future.

There are countless other examples within the academy ranks, too, including James Balagizi (DR Congo) and Isaac Mabaya (Zimbabwe), while 18-year-old Kyle Kelly made his friendly debut for St Kitts and Nevis in March but could still switch to England.

Jamie Carragher aims dig at Gary Neville in speech as Liverpool legend collects award

Liverpool.com - Wed, 03/27/2024 - 06:45

Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville have formed an unlikely punditry partnership after the clashes between Liverpool and Manchester United during their playing days. The pair now work together on Sky Sports, debating and analyzing the latest Premier League action.

And Anfield legend Carragher couldn't resist a dig at Neville's expense after picking up an award at the Sports Journalists' Association awards on Monday night. Sky Sports' Monday Night Football was voted Television Show of the Year, and Carragher who presents the show with David Jones, poked fun at Neville as he collected the prize.

Carragher suggested his colleague wasn't in attendance at the awards bash because he had been snubbed for the Pundit of the Year prize. "Being an ex-player, it's always difficult to get that buzz back you had as a player in the big moments," Carragher said.

"The thing I love about the show is that it's the one that gives me that buzz and excitement before a show starts. The fact we can get into the real detail of football.

"I think one of the reasons we got the award is people talk about the guests we have on and we're really determined to keep pushing the show forward and getting the best possible people on the show. A lot of work goes into it, we are really proud of the show.

"There's a couple of people not here tonight. Dave Jones had another appointment, but Gary Neville decided not to come because he wasn't on the shortlist for Pundit of the Year! That's for him [the award] as well and for all these people here. Thank you very much!"

The Pundit of the Year prize went to Ian Wright, who recently joined Carragher on Monday Night Football. Ex-Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha came second, ahead of Ally McCoist.

Liverpool.com says: Carragher had to get a dig in on his colleague and former rival as the pair continue their love-hate relationship on screen. Few would ever have seen their partnership coming but Sky Sports has taken its coverage to another level thanks to the ex-England defenders. Neville does have the bragging rights after United beat Liverpool in the FA Cup but the two sides will go head-to-head again next month.

Robertson injured against N Ireland ahead of Liverpool's title run-in

Liverpool FC on Sky Sports - Tue, 03/26/2024 - 20:29

Andy Robertson was forced off with an ankle injury during Scotland's friendly with Northern Ireland on Tuesday.

The Liverpool left-back, who missed 18 domestic matches across all competitions earlier this season due to a shoulder injury, was taken off in the first half of his side's defeat at Hampden Park.

Robertson tried to play on after twisting his ankle but had to come off five minutes after his club-mate Conor Bradley scored what proved to be the winner with his first senior international goal.

Scotland boss Steve Clarke hopes this is not another long-term problem for his captain just 11 weeks out from the Euros.

"He's just come off the pitch, let the injury take its course," said Clarke. "He'll go back to his club and they'll assess it and hopefully it's not too serious."

Reporting from Hampden Park, Sky Sports' Mark Benstead: "A huge worry for Steve Clarke and Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp - as Andy Robertson is forced off.

"A hefty challenge by Trai Hume left him clutching his left ankle - he tried to carry on but couldn't.

"That could be massive ahead of the Euros and in the Premier League title race."
